Fans of Bollywood are buzzing after Deepika Padukone’s surprise exit from the sequel to the hit sci-fi epic “Kalki 2898 AD.” The news hit hard, especially since Deepika played a key role in the original film.
Vyjayanthi Movies, the production house behind the project, confirmed the split in a post on X (formerly Twitter). They explained that after much thought, they decided to part ways with Deepika. “This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel to Kalki 2898 AD,” the statement read. “Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. A film like Kalki 2898 AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works.”
Deepika fired back with a thoughtful Instagram post, stressing that the people you work with matter more than a movie’s box-office success. She tied it to her latest gig: starting shoots for “King,” her sixth film with superstar Shah Rukh Khan. “The very first lesson he taught me almost 18 years ago, while filming Om Shanti Om, was that the experience of making a movie, and the people you make it with, matter far more than its success,” she wrote. “I couldn’t agree more and have applied that learning to every decision I’ve made since. And that’s probably why we’re back making our 6th movie together?”
In “Kalki 2898 AD,” Deepika shone as SUM-80, also known as Sumathi—a pregnant lab subject in Project K and the foretold mother of Kalki. Her character got plenty of screen time and became a fan favorite in the dystopian thriller.
Now, Deepika shifts gears to “King,” directed by Siddharth Anand. Reports say her role here is smaller than in “Kalki 2898 AD.” The action-packed story follows a tough don, played by Shah Rukh Khan, as he guides his daughter (Suhana Khan) through a gritty underworld. With this new chapter, Deepika keeps her streak alive with SRK, proving her point about collaborations that click.
