David Zucker, the director who helped create the original The Naked Gun movies, says he does not approve of the 2025 reboot.
In a recent interview with Woman’s World, Zucker expressed his disappointment with the new crime‑comedy, which was directed by Akiva Shaffer and produced by Seth MacFarlane. The film stars Liam Neeson as the granddaughter of the original hero and Pamela Anderson as his love interest.
“People started copying our style, like Seth MacFarlane did for the new Naked Gun. He totally missed it,” Zucker told the magazine. He added that the fresh version blew a $42 million budget—far more than the $14 million and $23 million spent on the first two films he wrote and directed.
Zucker has long believed that comedy shouldn’t rely on big budgets. “Big budgets and comedy are opposites,” he said. “The new film spent a lot of money on flashy scenes that tried to imitate our laugh‑track style rather than create fresh jokes.”
He also criticized the profit motive behind the reboot, saying the only reason for making the film was “to make money.” Zucker explained that if he made a new Naked Gun today, it would be a different kind of parody, perhaps riffing on Mission: Impossible or James Bond rather than the original 1980s formula.
Zucker has been critical of the reboot since its August release. He told the Daily Mail he “doesn’t plan on seeing it.” He also said he had written a spec script for Naked Gun 4 that Paramount turned down in favor of a project led by MacFarlane and Neeson.
Despite Zucker’s comments, critics have largely praised the new film. The New York Post gave it four stars and called it “the funniest movie to hit theaters in a long time.” On Rotten Tomatoes, the reboot holds an 88 % critic score and a 73 % audience rating.
While Zucker’s opinion shows that the original creators still have strong feelings about their legacy, the 2025 Naked Gun has already carved a spot among modern comedy releases, sparking debate among fans about nostalgia, budget, and the future of spoof films.
