Tom Hanks slipped into New York’s subway system this Tuesday, riding the 6‑line like any other commuter. The 69‑year‑old star kept a low profile—sporting a green jacket, a knitted beanie, black jeans, and boots, and hiding his face behind a white medical mask.
He even dropped his bag almost missing a stop, proving that even Hollywood’s biggest names can still trip over a train platform.
It wasn’t the first time Hanks has used the city’s underground. Earlier this month he caught the Pelham Packer, and on Oct. 7 he rode the 6‑line again, scrolling past the rush‑hour crowds.
After the ride he grabbed a coffee and relaxed on a park bench before tipping a street musician. The actor was on his way to rehearse his upcoming off‑Broadway play, This World of Tomorrow, set to open at The Shed on Oct. 30.
The play, inspired by Hanks’s 2017 short‑story collection Uncommon Type, follows protagonist Bert Allenberry (played by Hanks) as he travels back through time to the 1939 New York World’s Fair in Queens.
In a statement, Hanks described the show as a “one‑of‑a‑kind experience … like the World’s Fair of 1939.” He and director William McKnight co‑write the production.
Hanks isn’t the only Hollywood legend ditching limos for a few dollars on the subway. In April, 83‑year‑old Harrison Ford and his wife, Calista Flockhart, topped headlines aboard the downtown 2‑train.
After a brief kiss goodbye, Ford followed Flockhart’s cue and boarded the 1‑train to 59th Street, where he chatted with a stranger wearing a pink outfit. The “Star Wars” star admitted he hadn’t taken the subway in years, but the moment proved that even A‑list celebrities love a good subway adventure.
With this wave of star‑companion subway rides, New York’s underground is once again the stage for everyday moments, reminding residents that the city’s public transport isn’t just for commuters— it’s for anyone willing to hop on and share a few minutes on a train.
