Human Rights Lawyer blasts Pak in UN

Tense Moment at UN: Human Rights Lawyer Hillel Neuer Challenges Qatar and Pakistan on Terrorism Support

In a fiery exchange at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, human rights lawyer Hillel Neuer, who leads UN Watch, sparked drama by calling out Qatar and Pakistan for their alleged ties to terrorism. The event, which unfolded on September 12, highlighted heated debates on Israel-Qatar relations, UN double standards, and state-sponsored terror.

Neuer kicked off his speech by defending Israel’s actions amid ongoing bombings in Gaza. He directly questioned Qatar’s role, asking why the country shelters terrorists in its capital and lets Al Jazeera act as a "propaganda arm" for Hamas. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Neuer wrote: "Today at the U.N. I asked Qatar: If you don’t want targeted bombings on terrorists in your capital, why do you harbor terrorists in your capital? Why is your Al Jazeera serving as Hamas non-stop propaganda arm? Why do you act as mediator by day, and a terror sponsor by night?"

He didn’t stop there. Neuer turned the spotlight on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and French President Emmanuel Macron, pointing out what he called blatant hypocrisy. "Yesterday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and French President Emmanuel Macron condemned Israel. But when the U.S. killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, the UN chief at the time celebrated that justice has been done to such a mastermind of international terrorism. France called it a victory for all democracies. We ask both: how is this different?" Neuer shared this in another X post, underscoring the UN double standards in handling terrorism.

Things got even more intense when a Pakistani delegate jumped in to interrupt Neuer’s speech. The delegate fired back: "While we believe in constructive engagement with civil society organisations and value their inputs, we urge you to ensure that no speaker violates the principles and purposes of the UN Charter and the territorial integrity of sovereign member states. We reject casting unfounded accusations and allegations."

The UNHRC chair stepped in, handing the mic back to Neuer with just four seconds left. Neuer made them count: "Mr President, Pakistan is another state sponsor of terror." The bold remark left the room buzzing, as captured in a UN Watch X post.

Before the interruption, Neuer laid out more details on Qatar’s alleged involvement. He accused Qatar of hosting Hamas leaders like Ismail Haniyeh, Khaled Mashal, and Khalil al-Hayya in luxury hotels, where they supposedly planned attacks. "Terrorists who are still holding hostages, torturing them, and rejecting peace deals," he said. Neuer also slammed Qatar for funding Hamas since their 2007 Gaza takeover, claiming billions poured in to fuel five wars against Israel. He even referenced how Gulf states cut ties with Qatar in 2017 over these very concerns, labeling it a "state sponsor of terror."

Wrapping up his earlier points, Neuer drew parallels to Israel’s past operations. "When Israel captured the Nazi Adolf Eichmann, rescued hostages at Entebbe, and destroyed Saddam’s nuclear reactor, the UN condemned Israel. Each time, history vindicated Israel. And history shall remember the courage of those who acted, and the disgrace of those who condemned."

This UN confrontation on terrorism support and Israel-Qatar tensions has reignited global discussions on international law and hypocrisy at the world body. As debates rage on, Neuer’s sharp words continue to echo in human rights circles.
