Pankaj Dheer, a popular Indian actor best known for playing Karn in the 1988 TV epic Mahabharat, died in Mumbai on October 15 at the age of 68.
The film and television community has mourned his passing. Actor Arjun Feroz Khan, who played Arjuna on Mahabharat, posted on Instagram, writing, “Gentleman!!! Bids goodbye 💔 will miss you PD 💖 Stay blessed ✨.” He also shared a nostalgic photo of the two together.
Dheer’s death followed a long battle with cancer. Reports say his cancer had returned just a few months earlier. He underwent major surgery as part of his treatment, but his condition worsened. The Cine & TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) released a statement: “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our former Chairman and Hon. General Secretary, Shri Pankaj Dheer ji, on 15th October 2025. The cremation will take place today at 4:30 pm at Pawan Hans, Vile Parle (W), Mumbai.”
Dheer first rose to fame as Karn in Mahabharat, a role that made him a household name across India. He followed the mythic series with the lead in the 1993 drama Dastak, alongside Shagufta Ali and Sameer Kakkar. He also appeared in the horror anthology Zee Horror Show with Archana Puran Singh and starred as a defence lawyer in the legal drama Kanoon.
Beyond acting, Dheer helped launch the Abbhinnay Acting Academy in Mumbai in 2010, with Gufi Paintal as the faculty head. His legacy lives on through his work and his son, Nikitin Dheer, who gained fame for his role in Chennai Express.
Pankaj Dheer’s death leaves a void in Indian television, but his memorable performances and contributions to the industry will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
