Prime Minister Narendra Modi has warmly congratulated superstar Mohanlal on winning the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023, India’s top honor in cinema. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced the news on Saturday, celebrating the legendary Malayalam actor, director, and producer for his outstanding contributions.
In a tweet, Modi praised Mohanlal’s decades-long career. “With a rich body of work spanning decades, he stands as a leading light of Malayalam cinema, theatre and is deeply passionate about the culture of Kerala,” Modi wrote. He highlighted Mohanlal’s impressive roles in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi films too. “His cinematic and theatrical brilliance across mediums is truly inspiring,” Modi added, noting that the actor’s achievements will motivate future generations of filmmakers and artists.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also shared his excitement on X (formerly Twitter). He called Mohanlal “Lalettan” and tweeted, “Congratulations to Lalettan @Mohanlal ji. From the adipoli, beautiful land of Kerala to audiences worldwide, his work has celebrated our culture and magnified our aspirations. His legacy will keep inspiring Bharat creative spirit.” Vaishnaw reposted the ministry’s announcement, hailing Mohanlal’s lasting impact on Indian cinema.
The ministry revealed that the award comes on the recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee. “Mohanlal’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations!” they posted on X. They honored his “unmatched talent, versatility, and relentless hard work” that have set a high bar in Indian film history.
Mohanlal will receive the award at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on September 23, 2025. The icon kicked off his career young and has starred in films across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi industries, delighting fans with his versatile performances.
