Modi shared a photo with the actor, known for hits like “Monster,” and highlighted Mohanlal’s talent. “Shri Mohanlal Ji epitomizes excellence and versatility,” Modi wrote. “With a rich body of work spanning decades, he stands as a leading light of Malayalam cinema, theatre, and is deeply passionate about the culture of Kerala. He has also delivered remarkable performances in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi films.” Modi added that Mohanlal’s brilliance in cinema and theatre across different mediums truly motivates others.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced the honor on Saturday. On their official X account, they said the government selected Mohanlal based on the Dadasaheb Phalke Award committee’s recommendation. They celebrated his “remarkable cinematic journey” and noted how his acting, directing, and producing have set high standards in Indian cinema with unmatched talent, versatility, and hard work.

Mohanlal will receive the award on September 23 during the 71st National Film Awards ceremony. This top honor recognizes lifetime contributions to Indian cinema.

Mohanlal has a history of accolades from the Indian government. He earned the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019 for his work in films. Back in 2009, he made history as the first Indian actor to get an honorary rank of lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army.
