PM Modi remembers late singer Zubeen Garg’s deep connection to Assam, says “His music will continue to enchant generations”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tribute to the late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg during the 126th episode of his popular radio show Mann Ki Baat on Sunday. Speaking from New Delhi, Modi highlighted Garg’s strong ties to Assam’s rich culture and how his music touched hearts across India.

Fans and music lovers continue to grieve the sudden loss of Zubeen Garg, the beloved singer known for his soulful voice and deep roots in Assamese traditions. “Zubeen Garg will always stay in our memories, and his songs will keep inspiring generations,” Modi said.

This comes after Modi expressed his shock over Garg’s death earlier in the month. On September 19, 2025, the prime minister tweeted: “Shocked by the sudden demise of popular singer Zubeen Garg. He will be remembered for his rich contribution to music. His renditions were very popular among people across all walks of life. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on September 19 in Singapore due to an alleged drowning incident. He was there to perform at the Northeast India Festival. His body arrived in Delhi before being flown to Guwahati, Assam, on a commercial flight that landed Sunday morning.

Hundreds gathered for Garg’s final rites on September 23 in his hometown of Kamarkuchi village, Assam. Family, fans, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, and other leaders attended the emotional ceremony, where a gun salute honored the singer.

Authorities are now digging deeper into the circumstances of Zubeen Garg’s suspicious death in Singapore. Assam’s CID has filed a case (No. 18/2025) under Sections 61(2)/105/106(1) of the BNS, 2023, to investigate.

On Friday, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and CID officers raided the Guwahati home of Shyamkanu Mahanta, the key organizer behind Garg’s participation in the Northeast India Festival. They also searched the residences of Garg’s manager, Siddharth Sharma, and his colleague, musician Sekhar Jyoti Goswami. Investigators seized items like a pendrive, hard disk, computer CPU, documents, and more to piece together what happened.
