Amaravathi, Andhra Pradesh – Former YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) Health Minister Vidadala Rajini slammed the current coalition government led by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, saying the state’s flagship health scheme, Aarogyasri, has degenerated into “Anarogyasri.”
She warned that hospitals accredited to Aarogyasri are shutting down because they face more than ₹3,000 crore in unpaid arrears. “We have sent several letters demanding these payments, but no action has been taken,” Rajini told reporters. The minister added that no other Indian state has seen such a collapse in a public‑health program.
Rajini compared the present crisis with the YSRCP era, when the scheme expanded from covering 1,059 procedures to 3,257 and grew the network of hospitals from 900 to 2,300. “During the COVID pandemic, our government stepped up every possible measure to keep people out of harm’s way. We also launched the Family Doctor scheme to bring care to the poor,” she said.
Today, doctors across the state – both in network facilities and at primary health centres – are on strike. The government, however, has not responded. Rajini stresses that citizens are left to manage emergencies alone, often selling assets to pay for health and education.
The minister also criticised the coalition’s “insurance model.” “They switch between calling it an insurance model, a hybrid model, but cap coverage at only ₹2.5 lakh, and both approaches have failed elsewhere,” she warned. Rajini said the government’s focus on privatising medical colleges has distracted from pressing public‑health issues like diarrhoea outbreaks.
The YSRCP demands that the government settles all arrears immediately. “We have never adopted a public‑private partnership. Until that model is reversed, the YSRCP will keep fighting,” she added. Rajini concluded that a healthy state requires both health security and financial safety for its people. The current administration, she said, offers neither.
