Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee is buzzing with excitement over the stunning revamp of the Devi Chowdhurani Temple in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. This historic site, tied to the legendary bandit queen of Bengali folklore, just got a fresh lease on life, blending rich history, cultural heritage, and even a dash of modern cinema.
The temple reopened recently in a grand ceremony attended by big names, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. It’s more than just a building—it’s a tribute to Devi Chowdhurani, the 18th-century rebel who fought British rule alongside her partner Bhavani Pathak. She stands as a powerful symbol of courage, women’s empowerment, and resistance in Bengali stories. Sadly, a fire destroyed the temple in 2018, but now it’s back, shining brighter with restored architecture, fresh murals showing the duo’s daring adventures, and a renewed spiritual vibe.
Prosenjit, who’s starring in the upcoming film Devi Chowdhurani: Bandit Queen of Bengal, couldn’t hold back his joy. "Just hearing this gives me goosebumps," he shared. "The reconstruction of the Devi Chowdhurani Temple is truly a moment of pride and devotion for all of us. What could be better news than this, when our heritage and faith come together to be preserved for future generations?"
The timing couldn’t be more perfect. The movie, directed by Subhrajit Mitra and starring Prosenjit alongside Srabanti Chatterjee, reimagines Devi’s epic tale as India’s first woman freedom fighter. It’s set to hit theaters this Durga Puja and promises to celebrate themes of resilience and empowerment. This Indo-UK Bengali co-production comes from ADited Motion Pictures and LOK Arts Collective.
Srabanti, who plays the lead, was over the moon about the temple news. "It was unexpected and thrilled me to no end," she said. "Our film tells the story of the first woman freedom fighter in our country and honors women’s empowerment. Rebuilding this rundown temple to its former glory is an amazing step. It’s our way of paying homage to these forgotten warriors of the freedom struggle. Catch Devi Chowdhurani this Durga Puja!"
Director Subhrajit Mitra, who’s visited the temple before, added, "I knew about this spot in North Bengal and have seen it myself. After the film’s release, we might head there to pray. But even now, this initiative feels wonderful."
This revival isn’t just saving a piece of history—it’s keeping Devi Chowdhurani’s spirit alive, inspiring everyone from history buffs to movie fans. If you’re into Bengali cinema, women’s empowerment stories, or West Bengal heritage, this is one to watch.
