Los Angeles, Nov. 16 – In February 2007, the buzz around the Oscars was buzzing for one reason: Eddie Murphy. The 64‑year‑old actor‑comedian was the clear favorite to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the musical drama Dreamgirls.
Murphy had already picked up the award in the same category at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Critics‑Choice Awards. Critics called his performance a career high, and the film was a box‑office hit.
But when the Academy presented the winners, the trophy went to Alan Arkin for Little Miss Sunshine. Rachel Weisz, who had won Best Supporting Actress the year before for The Constant Gardener, opened the envelope, and Arkin’s name was called out. Murphy, who had been applauding politely, was visibly upset.
In the new Netflix documentary Being Eddie, which follows Murphy’s life and career, he says he was disappointed not because he didn’t win, but because he had dressed up for the ceremony and felt “wasted”. “I’m not upset about not winning,” he tells the camera. “I get dressed and show up because I usually don’t go to award shows. When I lose, it feels like I went all the way out of town for nothing.”
Murphy’s Dreamgirls co‑star, Jennifer Hudson, stunningly turned the evening around by taking home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The award night was a rollercoaster: Murphy’s dream of an Oscar slipped away, but Hudson’s triumph brightened the stage.
The 2007 Oscars will live on in fans’ memories as one of those nights when expectations were high, but the Academy’s decision took everyone by surprise.
