“Ramu never wanted songs in ‘Satya’…we were the culprits who added them”: Saurabh Shukla

Mumbai, India – In an engaging chat, celebrated actor and writer Saurabh Shukla talks about the birth of Satya, the 1998 gangster‑film that shook Indian cinema. The movie, directed by Ram Gopal Varma and leading by Manoj Bajpayee, still stands out for its gritty look at Mumbai’s underworld and its honest storytelling.

Shukla, who co‑wrote Satya with Anurag Kashyap, says the team never set out to create a classic. “We were just doing honest filmmaking,” he recalls. “If you’re busy looking for a cult hit or a box‑office smash, you’re not making a film at all.” That attitude kept the film grounded in reality rather than chasing titles.

The interview also reveals a playful behind‑the‑scenes moment about the film’s music. “Ram Gopal Varma wanted no songs,” Shukla shares. “We convinced him adding a few tracks would help the film sell better.” The music, scored by Vishal Bhardwaj with lyrics from Gulzar, added memorable numbers like “Goli Maar Bheje Mein” that matched the film’s bleak tone while keeping it audience‑friendly.

When asked why Satya seemed ahead of its time, Shukla comments on India’s evolving creative scene. “People can think and make films of this level, but are we ready for it?” he asks. He urges creators to draw confidence from India’s rich myths—stories that tackle deep moral questions—and to stop doubting their own power.

Satya helped Manoj Bajpayee win the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and earned several Filmfare Awards, cementing its reputation as one of Bollywood’s most influential movies. Saurabh Shukla is also seen in the latest hit, Jolly LLB 3, working with Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi.

For fans of Indian cinema, this conversation with Shukla offers a fresh look at how a 1998 film still shapes the gangster genre, and why its legacy remains relevant today.
