Trans Muslim killer tries to skip sentencing for executing parents — then makes excuse for murdering them

Mia Bailey, 30, was handed a sentence of 25 years to life at an Utah court on Friday for the double killing of her parents, Gail and Joseph Bailey, in their Washington‑Utah home on June 18, 2024. The judge heard emotional accounts from the two siblings who now live in fear after their sister used a gun to shoot both parents.

Before the sentencing judge, Bailey’s attorneys tried to avoid the hearing, arguing that the stress would trigger a mental‑health crisis for her. Her lawyer, Ryan Stout, recounted that Bailey has long struggled with multiple conditions—ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression, psychosis, possible bipolar disorder with psychosis, and schizophrenia.

He pointed out that she was hospitalized just weeks before the murders, was released after three days, and then, ten days later, carried out the killings.

In a statement read by her attorney, Bailey disclosed that she had converted to Islam and had legally changed her name and gender a year earlier.

“Because of my religious beliefs as a Muslim, it would be appropriate to take my life for atonement for what I did,” she wrote, a line that surprised many in the courtroom.

Corey Bailey, one of Mia’s brothers, told the judge that he believed his sister was not in her right mind on the day of the murders. He emphasized that, if anything, the family would benefit most if Mia stayed incarcerated for as long as possible. His words reflected the deep fear that now surrounds the siblings following the tragic event.

Dustin, the other brother, painted a picture of Mia’s long‑standing mental illness. He noted that their mother, Gail, had repeatedly challenged school staff to secure proper mental‑health care for Mia and had always defended her daughter with persistence rather than frustration.

The siblings described her struggles and the way the family had had to vacate their homes amid an overnight manhunt.

Bailey’s plea came in November, when she pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated murder and an aggravated assault for an attempt on another sibling present in the house. The court imposed two consecutive 25‑year‑life sentences, plus an additional zero‑to‑five‑year term for the assault charge.

During the sentencing hearing, the family’s loss was palpable. Corey remarked, “We’ve lost our parents and a sibling in many ways. So either way, no matter what, we are losing as a family on this sentence.” The judge ultimately applied the sentence, concluding a grim chapter in the Bailey household.
