Ranbir Kapoor recalls Raj Kapoor’s “telegram” to Vyjayanthimala led to creation of ‘Bol Radha Bol Sangam Hoga Ki Nahi’

Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor recently shared a behind‑the‑scenes story that reveals how his grandfather, legendary actor Raj Kapoor, convinced famed actress Vyjayanthimala to join the 1964 romantic musical drama Sangam. The tale unfolded during a special session at the annual Celebrate Cinema festival, hosted by director Subhash Ghai at Whistling Woods International in Mumbai.

Kapoor recalled that, back when WhatsApp didn’t exist, Raj Kapoor sent a telegram to Vyjayanthimala, urging her to play the role of Radha. “He asked, ‘Will you play Radha for Sangam?’,” he said. The actress replied, “It will happen, it will happen.” Those words became part of the song’s lyrics. The story is a neat glimpse into how a telegram can still shape classic Bollywood cinema.

During the same event, Ranbir discussed method acting and how early icons like Guru Dutt and his own grandfather inspired his style. He explained that his technique is not static—actors must adapt to each director’s vision. “The method changes with who you’re working with,” he told attendees. “You have to be an employee of the director’s vision.”

A Bollywood insider, Ranbir is the son of actors Rishi and Neetu Kapoor and the grandson of Raj Kapoor. He acknowledged that his family background gave him a head start, but he’s worked hard to prove himself. “I had nepotism, but I had to prove that I could do it on my own,” he said.

Ranbir’s training includes a stint at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York, where he learned the fundamentals of method acting. After returning to Mumbai, he assisted director Sanjay Leela Bhansali on the 2005 film Black, a role that helped him understand the practical side of the profession.

Looking ahead, the actor is set to play Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s highly anticipated two‑part epic Ramayana. He also appeared in a cameo on Netflix’s The Bads of Bollywood*, showing his continued versatility across film and streaming platforms.

With his blend of heritage, hard work, and evolving acting craft, Ranbir Kapoor remains a compelling figure in contemporary Bollywood, poised to take on iconic roles while sharing the stories that shaped his path.
