Rathna Kumar’s rom-com entertainer featuring Vidhu, Preethi Asrani titled ’29’
Chennai, Dec 10 (LatestNewsX) – The production team behind director Rathna Kumar’s forthcoming romantic comedy, starring Vidhu and Preethi Asrani, confirmed Wednesday that the movie will be titled 29. The announcement came alongside a teaser in which men whose ages are 29 are asked to identify themselves. Some share their names, others describe what they do or their interests, and when the question is directed at the film’s hero, he responds that he doesn’t know. While he ponders at a bus window, the heroine—played by Preethi—arrives and sits beside him.
The project has generated significant buzz, largely because it’s backed by the production houses of two of Tamil cinema’s most renowned directors. G Squad, headed by Lokesh Kanakaraj, and Stone Bench Productions, run by Karthik Subbaraj, are jointly producing the film.
During the teaser launch, Rathna Kumar shared, “The first time I got suicidal thoughts was when I was 29. It was from that point my outlook about life turned positive and from then, people look at me as a person full of positivity.” The director went on to explain his journey: “I quit my job at HCL to pursue filmmaking. It took a solid twelve years to get my name as a director. When I turned 29, the pressure at home to get married intensified. When someone turns 30, their horoscopes get rejected, applications get denied. At 29 I had finished a short film called Madhu. Using that, I tried to pitch another script to producers and presented it to 45 of them,” he added, noting that it was during this same year he befriended Lokesh Kanakaraj. “One of the most important reasons I’m here is Lokesh,” he concluded.
Speaking about the new film, Rathna Kumar highlighted that production wrapped in just 35‑40 days. “If my earlier rom‑com film, Meyaadha Maan, had a capital C, this film 29 will have a R,” he explained to emphasize that the previous movie leaned more heavily on comedy, whereas this one will focus more on romance.
Written and directed by Rathna Kumar, 29 also features Vidhu and Preethi Asrani in the leads, with supporting appearances by Master Mahendran, Avinash, Shenaz Fathima, and Premkumar. Mathankumar co‑directs, while Sean Roldan handles the music. Cinematography is by Madhesh Manickam, editing by R S Sathish Kumar, and Shanmugaraja leads the art direction. Praveen Raja designs the costumes, and Don Ashok choreographs the stunts.
The soundtrack credits Uma Devi and Bakkiyam Shankar as lyricists, and dance sequences are crafted by Sherif M and Leelavathi.
