Trump slams climate science at UNGA, calls it “greatest con job ever”; attacks renewable energy, migration policies

US President Donald Trump didn’t hold back during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. On September 24, he slammed climate change as “the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world,” calling out global efforts to fight it as a total waste. While leaders like UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva pushed hard for urgent climate action in their talks, Trump’s words struck a very different chord.

Speaking to the packed hall, Trump labeled climate change a “fake energy catastrophe.” He ripped into renewable energy sources, saying the push for them creates dangerous dependence. “The carbon footprint is a hoax, made up by people with evil intentions, and they’re heading down a path of total destruction,” he declared. His address dragged on for more than 45 minutes—nearly three times the UN’s recommended 15-minute limit for leaders—and eventually hit 55 minutes by the end.

Trump didn’t stop at climate talk. He unveiled a big US plan to stop biological weapons worldwide, promising an AI-driven system to verify compliance. “I’m calling on every nation to join us in ending the development of biological weapons once and for all,” he said, adding that he hopes the UN steps up to help.

He then turned his fire on renewable energy again, branding clean energy policies as a “green scam” and a “costly failure.” Trump warned countries like Germany, Greece, and Switzerland that heavy investments in renewables would doom their economies. “If you don’t get away from this green scam, your country is going to fail,” he told the audience.

Migration came under attack too. Trump blasted nations for what he called an “open borders experiment,” even as many have tight immigration rules in place. He praised America’s tough stance: “In America, we’ve taken bold action to swiftly shut down uncontrolled migration. Once we started detaining and deporting everyone who crossed the border and removing illegal aliens from the United States, they simply stopped coming.” He boasted that strong US borders keep the country safe.

Trump also highlighted US military strikes against drug traffickers in the Caribbean—operations that human rights groups have called extrajudicial killings. “To every terrorist thug smuggling poisonous drugs into the United States of America, please be warned that we will blow you out of existence,” he cautioned.

On a lighter note, Trump shared that he hugged Lula during their UN meeting and called him “a nice guy.” They plan to talk next week. But Trump stayed firm against Brazil’s recent moves: Former President Jair Bolsonaro, his ally, just got hit with a 27-year prison sentence for trying to overturn election results. Trump called it a “witch hunt” driven by politics, and said his team hit back with tariffs on Brazil and sanctions on judges involved.

Wrapping up, Trump hammered home his view on the world’s top problems: immigration and the high costs of so-called green renewable energy. “Countries that cherish freedom are fading fast because of their policies on these two subjects,” he said. He pushed for “strong borders and traditional energy sources” to make nations great again. At one point, he even mentioned his dream of winning a Nobel Peace Prize for his global work.

Trump ended with a passionate call to leaders: “Let us protect their borders, ensure their safety, preserve their cultures, treasure their traditions, and fight, fight, fight for their precious dreams and their cherished freedom.” He added, “It will happen… We’ll turn it around to make our countries better, safer, more beautiful.”
