Massive blasts after tanker hits truck carrying LPG cylinders on Jaipur-Ajmer highway, one dead

A truck loaded with about 330 LPG cylinders burst into flames after it was hit by a speeding chemical tanker on the Jaipur‑Ajmer highway last night.
The collision, which happened near Mokhampura in Dudu, set off a chain of explosions that sent the cylinders flying up to 500 meters. The blast was heard as far away as 10 kilometres. Firefighting crews, including twelve engines, fought the blaze for more than three hours, but a single passenger was burned to death in the fire.
Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma called the incident “extremely tragic” and promised full assistance to those affected. He said that the fire‑brigade and disaster‑management teams were already on site. “We are working hard to treat the injured and help the families hurt by this heart‑wrenching accident,” the CM wrote in a late‑night X post.
Traffic on the dual‑lane highway was shut down at about 10 p.m. to allow the workers to clear the wreckage and fight the fire. The road reopened to traffic around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday after a six‑hour delay. Vehicles coming from Kishangarh were rerouted via Rupangarh, while those heading from Jaipur toward Ajmer used a 200‑foot bypass that leads to Tonk Road.
According to witnesses, the tanker driver lost control after spotting an RTO vehicle on the road, swerved toward a roadside dhaba, and crashed into the parked LPG truck. The tanker’s cabin, which carried flammable chemicals, caught fire immediately, sparking the chain of explosions. Five other nearby vehicles also burned.
The driver of the LPG truck, Shahrukh, survived but described the scene as chaotic: “My truck was completely destroyed. The tanker driver was avoiding the RTO vehicle and hit me.”
The body of the victim was delivered to SMS Hospital, where Dr. Mrinal Joshi said the identity will be confirmed only after a forensic DNA test.
This tragic incident underscores the risks of transporting large volumes of LPG cylinders on busy highways and the importance of strict safety protocols.
