The film “Varanasi,” the big‑budget project from celebrated director S. S. Rajamouli, was officially announced in Hyderabad on Saturday, November 15. The star‑studded movie – featuring Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu – gets its title and a new role name for the lead, “Rudha,” released in a striking teaser.
The launch event took place in the heart of the Indian film capital, Ramoji Film City. Thousands of fans turned out, lining the streets in a campus‑wide celebration that many called one of the biggest fan gatherings in Indian cinema history. The stage was ten stories tall, with a giant 130‑foot screen that showed the title and a soaring, devotional‑tinted visual of the film’s story shifting across time and places.
When director Rajamouli stepped onstage, he explained why the team chose a video announcement over a traditional press conference. “I usually share stories at press meets, but this film needed more than words. We had to let the screen do the talking,” he said. The director teased that the film would introduce a new filmmaking technology – a “Premium Large Scale Format Filmed for IMAX” – that promises a fresh, immersive experience for audiences.
The teaser itself gives a taste of the epic scope. It shows glimpses of Mahesh Babu as Rudhra and hints at an international feel as the title “Varanasi” suggests a journey that crosses borders. The team also revealed the look and role of Prithviraj Sukumaran, the man who will play the antagonist Kumbha, and announced Priyanka Chopra as the character Mandakini, adding extra excitement for fans.
Rajamouli took a moment to honor his mentor and the father of Mahesh Babu, veteran actor Krishna, who is famous for pioneering technology changes in Indian films. “Krishna Haridas introduced many new technical advances,” the director remarked. “He was a trailblazer, and we’re proud to bring a new format to audiences.”
In addition to the title reveal, the evening featured a lively dance performance by Shruti Haasan, adding to the festive atmosphere. The organizers called the event “a once‑in‑a‑generation spectacle,” and it lived up to the hype with its huge stage, electric crowd and the dramatic buildup for one of the most highly awaited movies of the year.
For fans of Rajamouli’s previous works and Mahesh Babu’s powerful screen presence, “Varanasi” promises a blend of action, drama, and spiritual motifs. The title teaser and the live event have already set the buzz for an upcoming release that is expected to capture audiences across India and beyond. Stay tuned for more updates as the film’s release date approaches.
