Levee breach near Seattle triggers flash flood warning and evacuations

Residents in Tukwila, Washington, were ordered to leave the area early on Tuesday after a levee along the White River broke. This came only hours after officials had lifted an evacuation alert for a different broken levee in the same county.

Police in Pacific, about 20 miles south of Seattle, urged anyone in the evacuation zone near the river to “Go Now!” The National Weather Service in Seattle issued a flash‑flood warning for the breached river levee in King County.

The breaches followed several days of heavy rain that flooded communities across western Washington, forced evacuations of tens of thousands of people, and prompted a large number of rescue operations.

On Monday, crews used sandbags to reinforce the Desimone levee beside the Green River after a small section failed during a week of intense rainfall. This led to an evacuation covering parts of three suburbs.

King County’s emergency‑management director, Brendan McCluskey, said the order was sent to roughly 1,100 homes and businesses east of the Green River in Kent, Renton, and Tukwila. Roads in the area were closed, as seen in images from December 14, 2025 in Snohomish.

Later that evening, King County officials announced that the evacuation alert on the east side of the Green River had been lifted and that it was now safe to return. McCluskey reported that no one had been injured.

Officials from Renton and Tukwila confirmed that, by Monday afternoon, the flooding had been restricted to small industrial zones and that no residents were still being evacuated.
