Sarah Paulson said she feels “profoundly sad” after the death of her longtime friend and Hollywood icon Diane Keaton. The American Horror Story star, 50, shared her feelings in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter and on Access Hollywood. “I was incredibly close to her,” she told reporters. “This is a profoundly sad time for me.”
Keaton had been a mentor and a confidant for Paulson, the actress says. “All I can say is that what you thought of her as a performer, she was even more spectacular as a human being,” Paulson added.
Keaton’s passing
Diane Keaton died on Thursday, October 11, at the age of 79. Hospital staff confirmed that she succumbed to pneumonia. She is survived by her two adopted children, daughter Dexter (29) and son Duke (25). The actress was best known for classics such as Annie Hall and Father of the Bride.
A bond forged on screen
The friendship between Keaton and Paulson began in 1999 when the two starred together in the film The Other Sister. Paulson made her debut as a studio actor in that movie, playing Keaton’s on‑screen daughter. Later, both actresses would appear side by side at events such as the Hammer Museum Gala in 2015 and onstage at The Hollywood Reporter’s “Power 100” breakfast in 2012.
In a now‑viral clip, Paulson recalled that the first time she worked with Keaton, the older actress welcomed her with warmth and playful energy. “She carried me under her wing,” Paulson said. “I learned so much from her, not just acting, but life.”
Tributes from Hollywood
Keaton’s death drew praise from a wide range of celebrities. Keanu Reeves, who co‑starred with Keaton in Something’s Gotta Give, called her “a very special artist and person” in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. Al Pacino, who spent years with Keaton when they filmed The Godfather, said in an interview with Deadline that she “brought me happiness” and that her memory “remains vivid.” He described the news as “shaken” and “painful.”
Martina Arteaga, a colleague and friend, told The Post that Keaton was “a total artist” who shared a “generosity of spirit” and “loved being a mom.” Luciano Arquette, who appeared in Wildflower (directed by Keaton), added that no one will ever replace her.
Sarah Paulson’s response
In new interviews, Paulson made it clear that she is not yet ready to speak deeply about Keaton’s legacy. She aims to honor her memory but prefers to keep it simple: saying that the older actress was remarkable not only as a star but as a person. In a recent statement she told Access Hollywood that Paulson was “the luckiest person in the world” to have known Keaton.
In remembrance
Diane Keaton remembered her career as diverse—film, fashion, and filmmaking all played a role in her legacy. She was a trailblazer who helped shape the careers of younger actors, including Paulson. Her loss is felt across the industry, and many are celebrating her life and achievements.
Keaton’s friends, former co‑stars, and new generations of actors all share stories of gratitude and admiration. Her influence on Hollywood has left an indelible mark, and in a time of grief, many find solace in remembering the kindness, talent, and charisma of this beloved icon.
