Panna miner’s first dig strikes rich: Farmer unearths five diamonds

Bhopal, November 7 – Brijendr Kumar Sharma of Sirsvaha village in Panna district, Madhya Prach

Today, a hopeful start in the world of mining turned into a bright treasure hunt. Sharma uncovered five rough diamonds in the Bharkan mining area, the name of the district that has supplied India’s most famous stones for decades. The tiny miner now holds a total of 5.79 carats, including a 2.29‑carat gem, a 1.08‑carat stone and several smaller pieces.

A Tiny Find with Huge Impact

  • 0.77 carat brilliant
  • 1.08 carat
  • 0.91 carat off‑colour

Experts say the five diamonds could be worth between ₹5 lakh and ₹12 lakh, depending on color, clarity and market demand. For Sharma’s household, the discovery is a major lift, and it gives a boost to other nearby miners who work day‑after‑day for a chance at a glittering payoff.

Panna’s Shallow Mining Permit System

Sharma had only a shallow‑excavation permit, a license that lets small groups or individuals dig a limited depth with basic tools. The Mineral Resources Department praised his compliance with legal procedures and urged more locals to apply for permits. A senior officer said: “It shows how regulated mining can bring real benefits to ordinary people.”

From Cradle to Auction

The diamonds have been handed to the district diamond office for evaluation. The government will hold an auction to decide the final price. While waiting for the auctioneer, Sharma remains optimistic. “I never imagined my first dig would bring such a reward,” he said. “It’s a blessing.”

The Bigger Picture

Panna’s Bharkan mines sit in what’s known as India’s diamond belt. While large corporations dominate headlines, small‑scale miners like Sharma keep the spirit of grassroots mining alive. Their stories remind us that diamonds are still found in the soil that has been turned and dug for the past generations.

With ongoing support from the Mineral Resources Department, more local miners may soon share in Panna’s sparkling hope.
