Mumbai-based playback singer Shaan is gearing up for an exciting concert tribute to the iconic Kishore Kumar, and he’s sharing his candid thoughts on why some Hindi songs fade fast in today’s music scene.
Chatting with from his Khar office in Mumbai, Shaan dismissed the idea that all modern Hindi music is going downhill. “Bad songs have always been around in every era,” he said with a laugh. “It’s not like everything’s terrible now. Composers are still creating fantastic tracks, and singers like us are pouring our hearts into them.”
Reflecting on his own career, Shaan revealed he’s sung nearly 3,000 songs or more. “Out of those, how many do you remember? Maybe 10% or 15% at best. That’s just the way it works—some songs stick, others don’t. The bad ones get filtered out, and that’s been true forever. They’ll keep making them too,” he added.
But Shaan pointed to a big shift: smartphones and social media have totally changed how we listen to music. Our attention spans are shorter than ever in this hyper-connected world, where everything moves at lightning speed.
“Back in the day, you’d pop in a CD and enjoy six or seven songs straight through,” Shaan explained. “Now, with your phone, you’ve got billions of tracks from everywhere at your fingertips. In a busy day, you might hear one song in the morning, a couple in the evening, or skip through 10-12 quickly. Unless a song really hits your heart and sticks in your mind, it won’t last. People don’t have the patience anymore—they can binge four songs in a minute!”
The concert, ‘Forever Kishore Shaan Se’, promises to celebrate Kishore Kumar’s timeless hits with Shaan’s soulful voice. Organized by Namrata Gupta Khan and Rabbani Mustafa Khan of NR Talent and Event Management—who are family to Shaan’s guru, the late Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan—the event hits NMACC in Mumbai on September 19. Fans of Bollywood music and classic Hindi songs won’t want to miss this heartfelt tribute.
