Bollywood singer Shaan is mourning the sudden death of his old friend and fellow artist Zubeen Garg, whose passing has left the entire music world in shock. Zubeen, the popular Assamese and Bollywood singer known for his hit songs and compositions, died on September 19 after a tragic scuba diving accident in Singapore.
Shaan shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, posting a throwback photo of the two from their early days in the industry. “Zubin is truly a king!! Lived on his own terms… Left on his own terms,” he wrote. Shaan opened up about his regrets, saying, “Once again I realised how I haven’t kept in touch with such a darling friend, such a warm, uncomplicated, pure-hearted gentle soul… and regretted why I didn’t call him every time I thought about him… We have so many crazy memories together, but all from a very, very long time ago… I guess I will meet him in another dimension someday… Cheers, Brother.”
Zubeen Garg’s death came just days after he arrived in Singapore for the fourth North East India Festival at Suntec, set for September 20 and 21. The singer, who was also a music composer, had been promoting the event enthusiastically. In a video shared on his social media the day before the accident, Zubeen invited fans with excitement: “Friends in Singapore, I would like to invite you to the 4th North East India Festival in Suntec, Singapore, during the 20th and 21st of September. Come and explore the exotic part of India. We are carrying quality agri-products, craft products, tea experiences, dance forms, fashion shows and evening musical shows presenting rock bands and rappers from India’s Northeast.”
He added, “I will be there throughout the festival as cultural brand ambassador and will perform on the 20th evening with my popular Hindi, Bengali and Assamese songs. I would like to invite you all; it will be Saturday and Sunday, and entry is free. All come and support us. Cheers!”
Tragically, Zubeen never made it to the stage. During a scuba diving trip, he faced a mishap in the sea. Singapore police rescued him and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors fought to save him in the ICU. But despite their best efforts, Zubeen Garg couldn’t be saved. He was married to fashion designer and costume director Garima Saikia Garg.
A viral video circulating online shows Zubeen just hours before the accident, happily enjoying live music in the audience in Singapore. Fans and the music community are remembering him as a vibrant talent who brought energy to Assamese, Bollywood, and Northeast Indian music scenes.
