On December 4th, Mumbai was buzzing with excitement as Shah Rukh Khan and his longtime co‑star Kajol unveiled a brand‑new bronze statue in London’s Leicester Square, marking the 30‑year anniversary of their iconic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ).
Khan shared a snapshot of the unveiling on his Instagram, tagging Kajol and writing, “Bade Bade Deshon Mein, Aisi Chhoti Chhoti Baatein Hoti Rehti Hain, Senorita! Thrilled to unveil the bronze statue of Raj & Simran at London’s Leicester Square today, celebrating 30 years of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ)!”.
He added that the film’s statue is “Incredibly delighted that DDLJ is the first Indian film to be honoured with a statue in the Scenes in the Square trail. A big thank you to everyone in the UK for making this possible.” The star beckoned fans with a call to action, quoting, “Come meet Raj & Simran if and when you are in London… We would love to see you make more memories with DDLJ.”
The bronze likeness captures the beloved couple in a timeless pose, celebrating the film’s lasting influence on South‑Asian culture worldwide. It is the first statue of an Indian movie to grace Leicester Square, joining the likes of Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, Paddington, Singin’ in the Rain, and superheroes such as Batman and Wonder Woman.
For those who have yet to experience it, DDLJ follows Raj and Simran, two non‑resident Indians, who fall in love on a train from King’s Cross while traveling across Europe. The film’s opening scenes in Leicester Square—where the two first meet—make the location all the more fitting. Since its 1995 release, the movie has become the longest‑running Hindi film ever and even caught the attention of President Obama during an official visit to India.
