Actress Shailene Woodley says playing Janis Joplin in her upcoming biopic Janis Joplin: Get It While You Can is both thrilling and scary.
The 33‑year‑old star, who will also produce the film, told People that singing for the role pushes her to her limits. “Singing is very scary, very vulnerable,” Woodley said, adding that the experience is deeply personal.
The film has been in the works for almost seven years. Last year, California gave it a tax‑credit boost, giving the project a much‑needed push. Woodley is excited that Joplin’s story will shine on screen while supporting the city and people that mattered to the late singer. “I can hear Janis smiling and cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway in her psychedelic Porsche,” she joked on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Woodley and the team have secured authentic 1970s outfits and are working closely with musician‑producer Linda Perry, known for 4 Non Blondes and her own songwriting. Perry’s creative input is shaping the film’s soundtrack.
No release date has been set yet, but fans can expect a close look at Joplin’s rise, struggles, and lasting impact on American rock. This is the first serious attempt at a Joplin biopic after earlier projects with Amy Adams, Zooey Deschanel, Pink, Melissa Etheridge, Brittany Murphy and Renee Zellweger fell through. The new film promises a fresh, intimate portrait that could finally bring Joplin’s legend to the big screen.
