Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has received a huge honor: the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2023. The Indian government announced the news on Saturday, praising his incredible contributions to Indian cinema. Fans and fellow actors are celebrating this milestone, calling it a proud moment for Malayalam cinema.
Actress Shobana, who has shared the screen with Mohanlal in 56 films, was quick to congratulate him. She posted on Instagram: “Wishing dear Lal @mohanlal a huge congratulations on receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his mammoth contribution to the world of cinema. It is a proud moment for Malayalam cinema.” Their on-screen chemistry has long been a favorite among fans, with hits like Manichithrathazhu, Thenmavin Kombath, and Mambazhamkalam standing out as classics.
The duo recently reunited after 19 years in the blockbuster film Tharunam, directed by Tharun Moorthy. Released earlier this year, the movie marked Mohanlal’s 360th project and his 56th with Shobana. Excitement built around their pairing, drawing huge crowds and boosting its success as a major hit in Malayalam cinema.
Actor Soubin Shahir also shared his joy on Instagram. “What an absolute honour to grow up in the same era as the one and only Mohanlal Sir,” he wrote. “Congratulations on receiving the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award – a true recognition of your unmatched contribution to cinema. You are not just an actor, but an institution, an icon, and an eternal inspiration.” He added that Mohanlal’s legacy will keep inspiring generations.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting highlighted Mohanlal’s versatile career as an actor, director, and producer. “Mohanlal’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations!” their X post said. The award recognizes his talent, hard work, and lasting impact on Indian film history. He’ll receive it on September 23 at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony.
This isn’t Mohanlal’s first big recognition from the government. He earned the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019 for his work in cinema. In 2009, he made history as the first Indian actor to get an honorary lieutenant colonel rank in the Territorial Army.
