Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT), working with the Crime Investigation Department (CID), is ramping up its probe into the mysterious death of beloved singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore. They’re questioning people connected to the North East Festival where Garg was set to perform.
On Tuesday, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sandipan Garg showed up at the CID office in Guwahati for questioning. Investigators say he was on the yacht in Singapore when the 52-year-old singer died earlier this month. As a relative of Zubeen Garg, his account could help piece together what happened in those final moments. His statement might shed light on the timeline leading to the tragedy.
The day before, on Monday, musician Shekharjyoti Goswami and festival organizer Amritprabha Mahanta faced hours of grilling by CID officers. Both walked free that evening after a full day of interviews.
“We answered every question they had,” Goswami told reporters outside the office. “The CID talked to us one by one. We went to Singapore for the North East Festival, and they’ve asked us to come back if needed.”
Sources in the CID say they’ve already examined at least eight more people tied to the event. In total, all ten individuals—including Goswami and Mahanta—must stay ready for more questions.
Right now, the team is zeroing in on two big issues: Was the North East Festival officially kicking off when Zubeen Garg died? And what exactly went down on that yacht before Singapore Police pulled him from the sea?
Officials hope stories from those on board will clear up conflicting details from earlier reports. They want to check for any safety slip-ups or lack of oversight that might have played a role.
The Assam government set up this SIT after huge public outcry for a deep dive into Zubeen Garg’s death. The team is teaming up with Singapore authorities while collecting evidence and witness accounts back home in India.
The second autopsy report is still pending, and lookout notices are out for two festival organizers. The whole investigation feels tense as everyone waits for answers.
Zubeen Garg, a music legend in Assam and the North East, left fans heartbroken when he passed away in Singapore on September 19. His songs and cultural work touched millions, and his sudden death has fueled demands for justice in the region.
