Man stabbed by illegal migrant on NC train was good Samaritan trying to help other riders: authorities
A 24‑year‑old man was stabbed last week by a homeless migrant on a Charlotte light‑rail train, but prosecutors say the victim was simply trying to help when the attack happened. The badly injured passenger, Kenyon Dobie, posted on social media that he remains in critical condition and has a tube inserted into his chest to drain blood from his lungs. In a GoFundMe message, he wrote, “My body has taken plenty damage,” and added, “Have a tube running from my chest to a machine pumping blood out of my lungs.”
According to a court hearing, Oscar Solarzano of Honduras, 33, was drinking and shouting at commuters when Dobie confronted him on the Friday night train. Prosecutors claim Solarzano stabbed Dobie in the chest because he had challenged the shooter. Solarzano had previously been banned from the light‑rail system after getting drunk on a train and attacking a passenger; the ban is part of an extensive record that includes multiple arrests, a robbery conviction, and two deportations.
The alleged assault took place only four months after a 23‑year‑old Ukrainian refugee, Iryna Zarutska, was fatally stabbed on another Charlotte train. Surveillance footage showed the suspect—who is thought to be a homeless career criminal—unfolding a pocket knife and slashing Zarutska multiple times, including a fatal cut to the neck. Authorities have identified Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, as the suspect in that murder.
Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia Lockwood noted that Solarzano had been deported from the United States twice before illegally re‑entering for a third time. She listed his criminal background on X, stating, “His criminal history includes prior arrests for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, destroying evidence, resisting arrest, using a false ID, and convictions for robbery and illegally re‑entry.”
Solarzano now faces additional charges of first‑degree attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury, breaking and entering, possession of a concealed weapon, and being intoxicated and disruptive. He is being held without bond.
