Gulzar, the celebrated Hindi lyricist and filmmaker, graced a special gathering at Mumbai’s Whistling Woods International on October 8. The meeting was part of the Celebrate Cinema festival, which honored two pillars of Indian film history—Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt.
The festival highlighted the legacy of Bollywood’s golden era, bringing together creators and fans to revisit classic stories and songs that shaped the industry. Gulzar spoke with enthusiasm about the power of poetry and lyrics in movies. He praised director Subhash Ghai for valuing these elements and for his “forward‑thinking” approach, noting that this is the first time a film institute has merged literature and music so closely.
Ghai, in turn, called Gulzar a true teacher and guide. He described the lyricist as a “guru” who enlightens through poetry, literature, film and plain conversation. Ghai added that anyone who “speaks” offers a lesson, and he feels privileged to have learned from Gulzar.
Whistling Woods International used the two‑day event to connect students with industry experts, covering artistic, technical and commercial aspects of media and entertainment. The festival celebrated Indian cinema’s past while inspiring the next generation of filmmakers and writers.
The event showed how legends like Gulzar and Subhash Ghai keep the spirit of classic Bollywood alive, ensuring that timeless stories and songs continue to resonate with audiences worldwide.
