3 feared dead in Delhi wall collapse; rescue ops underway

A basement wall collapsed in Safdarjung Enclave, New Delhi, on Thursday night, killing three workers and leaving four or five others trapped under the rubble. Rescue teams from the Delhi Police, Fire Service and Disaster Rescue rushed to the site after a call at 6:09 pm.

The incident occurred while construction crews were digging a new basement. An underground concrete pillar and the surrounding soil gave way, causing part of the wall to cave in. The falling debris buried several labourers inside the unfinished structure.

Local residents managed to free one worker before help arrived. Police, fire tenders and rescue teams then lowered heavy equipment to dig out the rest of the trapped workers. Four of the injured labourers were taken to Sukhmani Hospital for treatment. Two more serious cases were air‑lifted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. One of those patients died on arrival; the other remains in the hospital’s critical care unit.

The three workers who died were from different parts of the country: a 60‑year‑old resident of Madangir (Delhi), a 35‑year‑old from Ghazipur (Uttar Pradesh), and a 70‑year‑old from Dausa (Rajasthan). The injured workers include residents from Ghazipur, Dausa and Sangam Vihar (Delhi).

Police officials have secured the site and are investigating whether safety regulations were ignored during the excavation. Legal action is expected in accordance with the law.

The collapse has drawn attention to safety conditions on Delhi construction sites. Authorities urge workers and contractors to follow building codes and to report any structural concerns immediately.
