Mumbai – Director‑writer Suparn Verma is set to release his new film Haq on a Friday, and he explained why he chose this powerful story. Speaking to ahead of the launch, Verma said the movie tackles a landmark moment in Indian women’s rights – the 2005 Supreme Court ruling that granted a divorced Muslim woman, Shah Bano, maintenance under the general law, a decision that sparked nationwide debate.
The film follows the true story of Mohd Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum. Shah Bano, a 62‑year‑old Muslim divorcee, challenged the practice of triple talaq. The Supreme Court awarded her maintenance under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code, declaring that all citizens, regardless of religion, have the right to financial support after divorce. The ruling upset conservative Muslim groups, prompting Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s Congress government to pass the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act, 1986 – effectively overruling the court’s decision and restoring that community’s personal law autonomy.
When asked if he felt pressured by the subject’s weight, Verma said, “I never approached this from fear. I come into stories with curiosity, passion, and the time to dig deep.” He added that India’s role as the world’s largest democracy means its decisions ripple globally, especially on universal issues like women’s rights.
Verma described Haq as a celebration of women and a deeply feminist film. “Women everywhere face prejudice and struggle, whether in their personal lives or careers. We need empathy, not a single viewpoint, to tackle these issues,” he said. “An open, nuanced conversation about such topics makes us richer as a nation and as an audience.”
The director believes that addressing uncomfortable subjects head‑on, rather than sweeping them under the carpet, is essential. “Talking openly about these matters—so they can be examined fairly and thoughtfully—strengthens our society,” he concluded.
