Tata Advanced Systems builds India’s 1st Naval 3D air surveillance radar for Navy

Tata Advanced Systems Makes History with India’s First Homegrown Naval Radar

In a big win for India’s defence sector, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) has become the first Indian company to build advanced naval 3D air surveillance radars. This milestone comes through a tech transfer deal with Spain’s Indra, boosting India’s push for self-reliance in military hardware.

TASL teamed up with Indra to install the first Lanza-N radar on an Indian Navy warship. This naval version of Indra’s top-notch long-range 3D radar shines in air defence and anti-missile missions, making it one of the world’s best for spotting threats from afar.

The successful setup means more Lanza-N radars will soon equip Indian Navy frigates, destroyers, and even aircraft carriers. It’s a game-changer for strengthening the navy’s surveillance capabilities.

To make this happen, TASL set up a special facility in Karnataka for assembling, integrating, and testing these radars. This local setup will ramp up production and ensure faster deliveries for future needs. Before going live, the radar aced tough sea trials, where it tracked various naval and aerial targets to prove its reliability. Now, it’s fully linked with the warship’s onboard systems.

Sukaran Singh, CEO and MD of Tata Advanced Systems, shared his excitement: "Our partnership with Indra shows our joint dedication to growing radar manufacturing right here in India. With local skills, a solid supply chain, and smooth technology transfer, we’re creating a strong ecosystem for cutting-edge defence tech."

Ana Buendia, Head of Indra’s Naval Business Unit, added that the collaboration goes way beyond just delivering radars. "We’ve built a radar factory in Bengaluru together. This lets us produce systems more efficiently with local support and better service for our clients," she said.

What makes the Lanza-N radar stand out? It can detect both friendly and enemy targets in the air and on the sea, from sneaky drones and fast supersonic fighter jets to anti-radiation missiles and other naval vessels. This is the first time the Lanza-N has been deployed outside Spain, putting India at the forefront as the only other nation operating this advanced system.

This achievement highlights India’s growing prowess in indigenous defence manufacturing, paving the way for more home-built naval radars and stronger maritime security.
