As Navratri 2025 draws near, Bollywood actress Tanishaa Mukerji shared heartfelt thoughts on her family’s iconic Mukherjee Durga Puja pandal in Mumbai. In an exclusive chat with , she reflected on her late uncle, Deb Mukherjee, who organized the event every year until his death in March.
The loss hits hard this time around. Tanishaa explained that the family has faced three deaths recently, making it tough to join the celebrations fully. “It’s a mix of sadness and excitement for us,” she said. “Our Debu Kaka, who always handled Durga Puja, is gone, so attending feels difficult. But we’re pushing forward with his dream to make it even bigger.”
To honor Deb Mukherjee’s vision, the family plans to amp up the grandeur. They’re boosting social media presence to draw more crowds and aim to serve food to a larger number of people during the festivities—something he always wanted.
Deb Mukherjee, who passed away on March 14 at age 83, was a key figure in Bollywood’s Mukherjee clan. He was the father of filmmaker Ayan Mukerji and uncle to stars Kajol and Rani Mukerji. His mother, Satidevi, was the sister of legendary actors Ashok Kumar, Anup Kumar, and Kishore Kumar. Deb’s brothers included actor Joy Mukherjee and filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee.
The veteran actor married twice. From his first marriage, he had daughter Sunita, who’s wed to director Ashutosh Gowariker. Ayan came from his second marriage. Deb’s final screen role was a cameo in Vishal Bhardwaj’s 2009 hit “Kaminey,” starring Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra.
