Filmmaker Tanuja Chandra recently opened up about her time working with the late Indian star Irrfan Khan on “The Pooja Bhatt Show.” During the episode, she shared memories and funny moments from the set of the 2017 romantic‑comedy Qarib Qarib Singlle, in which Khan co‑starring Parvathy Thiruvothu.
Chandra called working with Khan “beautiful, difficult.” She told the audience that the veteran actor preferred a limited number of takes because he feared that too many shots would strip a scene of its natural spontaneity. When asked about Khan’s hesitation, Chandra recalled that the actor took a whole year to say “yes” to the role. She finally persuaded him by saying, “If it can’t happen, maybe we’ll try again later.” For a while, his wife suggested they cast another actor instead. When Chandra asked whether Khan wanted to keep him in the film, he answered, “I’ll do it if you want it with Farhan.”
On the set, Chandra laughed about challenges during dubbing. She remembered the sound designer telling Kyran, “Speak a little louder,” and the actor responding, “Why? I can hear you.” She also recounted the difficulties of framing both themselves in a single shot. “I’m short, he’s tall,” she joked, but Khan replied, “After this film, I think you’re towering over me.”
Qarib Qarib Singlle follows two polar opposite characters, Yogi and Jaya, who meet through a dating app and revisit their pasts to rediscover themselves. The film’s release brought renewed attention to Khan’s career, which also included acclaimed works such as Life of Pi and The Lunchbox.
Irrfan Khan’s health began to decline in 2018 when he was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer. He received treatment for a colon infection caused by the disease in 2020 and sadly passed away at the age of 53 on October 8, 2023. His mother, Saeeda Begum, died just four days earlier in Jaipur.
The interview clip was shared on Instagram, where Chandra’s post highlighted her travels through her career in cinema, her friendship with lyricist Anand Bakshi, lessons from failure, her collaborations on Sur with Lucky Ali, and her recent podcast on iHeartradio. Fans were encouraged to watch the full episode for an honest and uplifting story of film life and friendship.
