‘Systematic assault on Hindu rights’: TN BJP attacks DMK govt over Thiruparankundram Deepam blockade

Chennai, Dec 5 (LatestNewsX) – Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad fired a harsh critique at the M.K. Stalin‑led DMK administration, accusing it of a “systematic, ideologically driven assault on Hindu religious rights” after the dispute over lighting the traditional Karthigai Deepam on Thiruparankundram hill.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had already ordered the millennium‑old Deepam ritual to be permitted at the sacred hill overlooking the Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple.

BJP officials claim that the temple’s governing body and the HR&CE Department, acting with the state’s backing, chose to refuse the order and instead lodged appeals that the Division Bench dismissed.

According to the statement, when the Bench instructed CISF troops to enforce the ruling, police blocked the approach to the hill, barred devotees from proceeding, and detained Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran along with senior leader H. Raja.

The party called this a “wilful obstruction” of a judicial mandate and a clear breach of the religious freedoms outlined in Articles 25 and 26 of the Constitution.

Prasad slammed the state government for using police power to curb legitimate religious activities, labeling the Thiruparankundram events a “criminal misuse of executive power.”

He pointed to a wider trend involving the protracted struggle over control of the Chidambaram Nataraja Temple, previous restrictions on Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremonies, and other temple takeover controversies in Chennai and several districts.

The statement alleged that the state was “weaponising the HR&CE Department as an extra‑constitutional authority to curb Hindu rights,” arguing that such conduct amounted to institutional discrimination in a majority‑Hindu state.

Calling the government’s position a “brazen contempt of court,” the BJP vowed to record every act of defiance, arrest, and administrative maneuver for “future legal and constitutional scrutiny.”

Despite the roadblock, the party insists that the traditional flame of Thiruparankundram “will be lit again,” and that those responsible for the denial will ultimately be held accountable both legally and by the voters in 2026. The statement closed by reaffirming the BJP’s pledge to “protecting religious rights and the spiritual heritage of Tamil Nadu.”
