Thalassophobic Gillian Anderson wanted to be marine biologist

Gillian Anderson, the celebrated Hollywood actress best known for her turn as Agent Scully in The X‑Files, once dreamed of a very different career—becoming a marine biologist. She admitted the idea seemed outrageous because, despite her fascination with the ocean, she really feared the sea.

At 57, Anderson recalls looking seriously at marine science before heading to drama school. “I was terrified of the water even then,” she told HELLO! magazine. “I still can’t swim deep and I’m not a strong swimmer.” The actress, who got her start in theatre as a teenager, says the sea remained a mystery she couldn’t fully conquer.

In addition to her little fear of water, Anderson is also a bit wary of high‑tech gadgets. “I can use a computer and a phone just fine,” she said, “but if you want me to navigate the newest apps and devices, I’m not really equipped.” That contrast adds intrigue to her role in the latest Tron installment, where she plays Elisabeth Dillinger—daughter of the original franchise’s villain—and a tech‑savvy business leader in a digital world.

When asked how Tron: Ares reflects today’s tech scene, Anderson said the film feels “exactly relevant.” She pointed to themes of artificial intelligence (AI) and how art and creativity might be affected by advanced technology. “Elisabeth’s warnings mirror what we’re facing right now with AI,” she remarked.

Tron: Ares—released on October 10—pulls viewers into a universe where humans first meet AI beings, then confront a rogue program called Ares in the real world. Anderson says the movie matters not only for its sci‑fi spectacle but for the conversation it sparks about the future of technology and creativity. “I think it’s concerning for us all,” she added.

The film carries personal significance for Anderson as she hopes it will bring her closer to her sci‑fi‑obsessed sons, Oscar and Felix, who are 19 and 17. She also shares the movie with her 32‑year‑old daughter, Piper, from a previous marriage. “They love sci‑fi, and I haven’t done anything in the genre since The X‑Files,” Anderson said, “so it’s fun to share this experience.”

A devoted sci‑fi fan, Anderson expressed excitement about the new Tron adventure. “I’m a huge sci‑fi fan and it feels good to be part of something as well‑loved, interesting and spectacular as Tron: Ares,” she said. “I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”

The story blends Anderson’s early marine‑biologist dream, her continued love of ice‑cold pop culture and her concerns about tomorrow’s technology, proving that even a celebrated Hollywood actress can be as multi‑dimensional and curious as the characters she plays.
