Violence breaks out in Chomu, Jaipur, prompting internet shutdown
Jaipur – A clash that began over a dispute about railings around a local shrine has turned Chomu into a tense hotspot. Police say the unrest erupted after community members removed loose stones from the road and later installed iron railings and a boundary wall near a shrine close to the town’s main bus stop.
Authorities had already agreed to clear the stones from the roadside, but tensions flared when the new railings were erected. When officers and civic officials arrived around 3 a.m. on Friday to remove what they deemed an illegal encroachment, a mob broke out. Stone‑throwing ensued, leaving six police officers wounded.
On Saturday, the Divisional Commissioner Poonam extended a 24‑hour internet shutdown—originally scheduled to lift at 7 a.m. Saturday—after receiving a note from the Police Commissioner. “We are concerned that false information circulating on social platforms could inflame an already volatile situation,” the commissioner said. The ban will now remain in place until 7 a.m. Sunday.
The police have arrested 110 suspects, including 11 women, in the course of a major crackdown. Arrests followed the identification of stone‑throwers who were detained at their homes. Special Commissioner Rahul Prakash is overseeing the investigation and has warned that anyone who disrupts communal harmony will face strict measures.
Chomu has been declared a high‑security zone, with regular flag marches and a strong police presence across sensitive locales. Although markets and traffic continue to operate normally, officers remain on high alert.
Residents have been urged to disregard rumors, cooperate with authorities, and help keep peace in the area.
