Bollywood star Urmila Matondkar recently took fans on a nostalgic ride, sharing heartwarming memories of her first meeting with legendary actress Shabana Azmi. It all started back in 1983 during the photo shoot for their iconic film Masoom, which was Urmila’s big debut as a child actor.
On Shabana’s 75th birthday, Urmila posted a sweet tribute on Instagram, complete with throwback photos from the movie. Masoom, directed by Shekhar Kapur, is a touching adaptation of Erich Segal’s 1980 novel Man, Woman and Child. The story dives into the life of Devendra Kumar (played by Naseeruddin Shah), whose happy family gets shaken up when he brings home Rahul, an illegitimate son from a past affair. His wife Indu (Shabana Azmi) struggles to accept the boy, leading to emotional drama. The cast also features young Jugal Hansraj, Saeed Jaffrey, with special roles by Tanuja and Supriya Pathak.
In her post, Urmila wrote, "Year 1983… location Janki Kutir. Tiny, anxious n nervous me see the great Shabana Azmi for photo shoot of ‘Masoom’ n thereafter it’s been an exceptional bond of love, respect, admiration, learning, laughters, madness n so much more." She went on to thank Shabana for teaching her "how to live life at its fullest with everything that it throws at you." Urmila called her an inspiring force both on screen and off, adding, "Happy Birthday Queen 75 never rocked more than this @azmishabana18!"
This bond between the two actresses highlights the timeless charm of Bollywood classics like Masoom, which continues to inspire new generations. Speaking of Urmila’s journey, her 1995 hit Rangeela is making a grand comeback to theaters after 30 years in the Hindi film industry. Ultra Media’s Ultra Rewind initiative has restored the film to bring back its magic for old fans and introduce it to younger audiences.
Rangeela, directed by Ram Gopal Varma, stars Urmila as Mili, a dreamer chasing stardom in Bollywood. Things get complicated when she catches the eye of famous actor Raj Kamal (Jackie Shroff) and her childhood buddy Munna (Aamir Khan), sparking a fun love triangle. Packed with unforgettable songs and dances, the movie captured the glitz and struggles of the film world like never before.
Urmila’s throwback post has fans buzzing about these Bollywood gems, proving that some stories never get old.
