Mumbai – Renowned comic actor Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, died on Tuesday at the age of 84. The cause of death has not been released.
Last rites were carried out at Santacruz Crematorium on Monday. Only hours before his passing, he posted a Diwali greeting on his social‑media account, wishing his fans a happy festival.
Asrani was one of India’s longest‑standing comic performers. After training at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, he entered Bollywood in the mid‑1960s. He appeared in more than 350 films, becoming a familiar face in Hindi cinema throughout the 1970s and 1980s as a lovable fool, a flustered clerk, or a quick‑wit sidekick. His perfect timing and expressive face earned him a reputation as directors’ favourite.
He is best remembered for his iconic role as the bumbling jailor parading Hitler in the classic film Sholay, a character that remains an enduring part of Indian pop culture. Other memorable performances include Chupke Chupke and several other landmark Bollywood movies.
Beyond comedy, Asrani worked in Gujarati and Rajasthani films, directed a handful of Hindi and Gujarati movies, and occasionally took on dramatic roles in films such as Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar and Chala Murari Hero Banne. His long partnership with fellow comedian Mehmood, as well as his collaborations with stars like Rajesh Khanna and Govinda, bridged generations in Bollywood comedy.
Asrani’s contribution to Indian cinema was not only through laughter but also through his steady presence and the charm he brought to every screen. The film community and fans worldwide remember him for his dynamic talent and enduring influence in Bollywood.
Details about the actor’s death are still pending.
