Mumbai, November 6 – Bollywood legend Sulakshana Pandit died at the age of 71. The veteran actress and singer passed away after a long illness in a Mumbai hospital.
Sulakshana Pandit first rose to fame in the 1970s, not only as a screen presence but also as a celebrated playback singer. She began singing at nine and won a Filmfare Award in 1976 for the song “Tu Hi Sagar Tu Hi Kinara” from Sankalp.
Her film debut came in 1975 with Uljhan. Over the next decade she shared the screen with stars like Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Vinod Khanna, Shashi Kapoor and Shatrughan Sinha. Notable movies include Hera Pheri, Waqt Ki Deewar, Apnapan and Khandaan.
Pandit’s singing legacy continues through her famous duet “Saat Samandar Paar Se” with Lata Mangeshkar in the 1967 film Taqdeer. Her final playback hit was “Khamoshi: The Musical” (1996), composed by her brothers Jatin‑Lalit.
She was born on July 12, 1954, in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, and came from a family of musicians. Sulakshana was the sister of actress Vijayta Pandit, the elder sister of the music‑duo Jatin‑Lalit, and a niece of legendary classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj.
No official statement has been released by her family or team. The film community mourns the loss of a pioneering actress and voice that left an indelible mark on Bollywood’s golden era.
