Mumbai, Nov 23 (LatestNewsX) – At the 56th International Film Festival of India in Goa, filmmaker‑producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra opened a masterclass where he delivered a scathing critique of the current trend toward social‑media fame and its influence on cinema.
During the session, Chopra said, “What word can I use? These are a****. They go on the Internet, and stand in a certain way. Someone has 5 million followers, someone has 10 million, another has 20 million.” He went on, “The social media influencer thinks that he is a legend. And then brands go to that fellow and say, ‘Please sell our product’. The influencer stands again, and says, ‘Hey, buy this tiffin. Buy whatever’. What the f is going on? You as an individual have to choose whether you want to be that or you want to really strive for happiness and joy.”
Chopra also used the platform to talk about his 1942 classic A Love Story, revealing how it’s being restored to 8K, and shared a memorable anecdote about his former assistant, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who once scattered breadcrumbs on a mountain to coax birds for a film sequence.
He argued that contemporary cinema often prioritises visual spectacle over narrative depth, yet he insists his own movies stay grounded in the social realities of their eras.
The 56th IFFI, which is currently in full swing in Goa, showcases more than 240 films from 81 countries. The line‑up features 13 world premieres along with international and Asian debut titles, and the event kicks off with a spectacular parade along the Mandovi River.
