Mumbai, Dec 27 – In a conversation with IANS, actress Wamiqa Gabbi highlighted what she sees as the most transformative shift in cinema over the past few decades: the fact that screenwriters finally enjoy the room to tell stories without having to shout them out.
Reflecting on the new millennium, she added that contemporary films have leaned into quieter, more nuanced storytelling. “What really stands out for me is how much space storytelling has found. The last couple of decades have allowed for quieter narratives, flawed people, and stories that don’t need to shout to be heard.” This sentiment underscores her belief that audiences now appreciate subtlety over spectacle.
Wamiqa also spoke about the role of technology in speeding up production and distribution, but emphasized that the real game‑changer is trust. “Audiences today are open to nuance and complexity, and that honestly surprised me. There’s room now for performances that unfold slowly and for stories that linger instead of aiming only for instant reaction,” she said.
Her film journey began with a small role as a child in “Jab We Met,” before establishing herself as a leading lady in Punjabi cinema with blockbusters like Tu Mera 22 and Nikka Zaildar (and its sequels). She later branched out, appearing in the Tamil romance Maalai Naerathu Mayakkam and the Malayalam sports drama Godha. More recently she was seen in the fantasy romantic comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf — a film directed by Karan Sharma and featuring Rajkummar Rao and Seema Pahwa.
Looking ahead, Wamiqa is set to appear in the highly anticipated sequel “Pati Patni Aur Woh 2,” alongside Ayushmaan Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan. Directed by Mudassar Aziz, the movie is slated for a theatrical release on March 4, 2026, coinciding with Holi.
She will also feature in several other projects that are generating buzz: Bhooth Bangla (directed by Priyadarshan), Kuku Ki Kundali, Tiki Taka, and Goodachari 2. Priyadarshan’s Bhooth Bangla brings together the iconic trio of Priyadarshan, Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal, with Tabu, Rajpal Yadav and Mithila Palkar in key roles. The film is produced by Shobha Kapoor and Ektaa R Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms in partnership with Akshay Kumar’s Cape of Good Films, and co‑produced by Faara Sheikh and Vedant Baali. Bhooth Bangla is set to hit theaters on April 2, 2026.
