Farida Jalal, the iconic Bollywood actress, shared a deeply personal story on the Mumbai‑based talk show Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai – show‑stopper she famously played in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai – about how her parents’ divorce shaped her childhood.
The actress recalled that when she was just two years old, her parents broke up, and a court ordered that she and her siblings attend a boarding school. “My mom ended up with custody,” she said. “I spent my early years at a missionary school that really changed me.” While at school, she would often be asked to explain songs in English or pick dance numbers that suited her. In one memorable moment, the teacher insisted, “First translate, then dance,” and Farida ended up performing a piece she felt mirrors the storm of her childhood.
Jalal didn’t just sit in silence; she talks about how those moments nudged her toward acting. “I always wanted to perform. In school, I danced a lot. The stage felt like home.” That natural love for storytelling steered her career, and she says she almost fell into acting – a path she’s followed for five decades.
Now in her 90s, Jalal’s film list reads like a tribute to classic Hindi cinema. She’s appeared in more than 200 films, including the 1994 hit Raja Hindustani, the 1997 musical Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), and the beloved Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995). Her roles have earned her recognition as one of Bollywood’s beloved character actresses.
The interview, filmed in Mumbai on October 20, offered fans a rare glimpse into the early challenges of a woman who turned personal hardships into art. Her story shows that even amid a tumultuous childhood, a passion for performance can pave the way for a legendary career in film.
