When Mark Ruffalo saved Woody Harrelson from bar fight

Mark Ruffalo said he stopped a bar fight in New Orleans while shooting the heist movie “Now You See Me.”
The 57‑year‑old actor was filming the film on the city’s streets during Mardi Gras when a bar scene turned chaotic.
He shared the story on “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” the podcast with Woody Harrelson and former Cheers star Ted Danson.

Ruffalo recalled: “We were shooting on the streets, right in the middle of Mardi Gras. We had a bar scene, and a woman walked up to Woody and said, ‘Oh my God, I love you so much.’ He responded, ‘Thank you, darling.’ Then this guy pushed the woman away and shoved Woody.”
Danson laughed, saying, “That’s bad, not good.”
Ruffalo added that Woody’s first instinct was to punch the intruder instead of shoving him back.
He said Woody’s reaction was understandable, but the situation could spiral out of control.

“I was in the middle of it, and it looked like it was turning into a whole melee,” Ruffalo said. “I grabbed Woody and pulled him out. I was thinking, ‘This could be fun, but it could also turn disastrous. We can handle ourselves, but the rest of the crew can’t.’”
Harrelson confirmed the incident, calling Ruffalo’s quick action a “right thing to do.”

Danson admitted he would have waited and called someone. “I’d have said ‘I’ll be right back,’ later.”

The episode highlighted the chaos that can arise during on‑location shooting, especially in a city as vibrant—and sometimes unpredictable—as New Orleans. The incident underscores the importance of safety and quick thinking on set, no matter how iconic the actors involved.
