During a recent Kapil Sharma show, playback singer Amit Kumar shared a funny story about working with legendary music director O P Nayyar. The clip captured the singer’s lively recollection, and it quickly went viral on social media.
Amit, the son of iconic singer Kishore Kumar, explained how O P Nayyar, who famously favored Mohammed Rafi, came calling to give him a chance. “He asked me to come to a hotel rehearsal at 10 am for a duet with Kavita,” the singer recalled. “I was only 10‑15 minutes late and he was already waiting at the door.”
Nayyar was strict. “He told me, ‘Is this the time to come? Do you think you’re Mohammed Rafi? I’m a military man. You should be on time,’” Amit laughed. The recording went on at Bombay Lab, but when the session stretched past noon, Nayyar shut it down. “I wasn’t happy. I wanted another take – but he said, ‘You can’t sing better than this,’” he told us, his booming voice making the audience laugh.
The surprise reveal came from a clip that surfaced on Instagram: Amit talked about how the famed composer had kept a promise even after his death. “I worked with all the music directors, but I never got to work with S D Burman. He was in the audience for my first show, threw a garland at me, and that was the best award I got,” he added.
The story shows that even the best of the Bollywood music world had their moments of tension and humor. It reminds us that behind the glamorous songs are real, human interactions – and even a legendary music director like O P Nayyar wasn’t immune to a little irritation over timing.
