Tom Cruise says he actually met Dustin Hoffman in a chance encounter that led to his role in the 1988 hit Rain Man.
A clip that resurfaced this week shows the star laughing about how his sister, Cass, practically dragged him onto the set of “Death of a Salesman,” where Hoffman was ordering take‑out.
Cruise told reporters he was nursing a burger at a restaurant when Cass whispered, “Dustin Hoffman is here. Go say hello.” He laughed that he didn’t want to bother the actor, but Cass was insistent. “If I didn’t go, I’d just walk up and tell him who I am,” she said.
Eventually the actor gave in. “I stood in front of him, said ‘Excuse me, Mr. Hoffman, I’m sorry’,” Cruise recalled. Hoffman ran the name off the top of his head in one breath. He was so friendly that he invited Cruise and his sister backstage and even gave him a photo op.
While there, Hoffman told Cruise, “I’d love to make a movie with you.” That comment sparked a friendship that led to the role of the autistic savant in Rain Man. The next year, Hoffman sent the script to Cruise. The film turned into one of Hollywood’s biggest bi‑annual box‑office successes and earned Academy Award nominations.
Cruise’s story is a reminder that the biggest opportunities often come from simple, personal moments. The 57‑year‑old actor, who later became a global star, credits his sister’s relentless encouragement and a fortuitous meeting with Dustin Hoffman as the keys to a career‑making break.
