Rani Mukerji kicked off her Bollywood journey with the 1997 film Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, and there’s a hilarious twist to how it all happened. The movie didn’t light up the box office, but it opened doors for Rani’s breakout roles in hits like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Ghulam. What many fans don’t know is that her own mom nearly talked the producer out of casting her.
In a fun chat with , Rani shared the story with a laugh. After her first screen test, her mother, Krishna Mukherjee, straight-up warned producer Salim Akhtar. "She thought I was terrible," Rani said. "Mom told him, ‘You’ll ruin your film if you take my daughter. You’ll lose money. Don’t do it.’"
Even so, Salim Akhtar stayed excited about signing Rani. "He was really keen on me," she added. "But Mom knew I wasn’t nailing it yet, so she tried to save him from a bad choice."
Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat became Rani’s big Bollywood debut, though she’d already dipped her toes in with a Bengali film. She starred as Mala, a young teacher who falls for and marries a wealthy guy named Raj, played by Shadab Khan. Just a year later, Rani was stealing scenes in movies that shaped the late ’90s and early 2000s, turning her into a Bollywood icon.
