The body of beloved Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has finally reached India after his sudden death in Singapore. The popular artist, known for hits like “Ya Ali” and his roles as a cultural icon and filmmaker, was set to perform at an event before tragedy struck.
On Saturday, after a post-mortem, Singapore authorities handed over Garg’s remains to the Indian ambassador. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma flew to New Delhi to personally receive them, joined by Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita. The group is now arranging a special flight to bring the singer’s body back to his hometown of Guwahati.
Sarma shared that the remains will first head straight to Garg’s family home, giving them private time to say goodbye. “We ask the public to respect this moment for the family—it’s their last together,” the chief minister told reporters.
Fans and admirers will get their chance to pay respects on Sunday, September 21, when Garg’s body lies in state at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Sarusajai, Guwahati. The viewing runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the Assam government urges everyone to join in a dignified farewell for their “eternal heartthrob.” A cabinet meeting later that evening will decide on the cremation spot.
In honor of Zubeen Garg’s legacy, the Assam government has declared three days of state mourning starting now. That means no official entertainment, ceremonies, or public events during this period.
Condolences are flooding in from across India for the singer who touched millions with his music and films. In Guwahati, crowds of fans have already gathered outside Garg’s residence, hoping for one last glimpse of their idol.
