In New Delhi on Sunday, over 10,000 runners—Army officers, soldiers, professional athletes and everyday citizens—joined the “Shauryaveer – Run for India” event. The marathon was part of the 79th celebration of Shaurya Diwas, a day that honors the bravery of the Indian Armed Forces.
Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi opened the race, thanking everyone for the “overwhelming” turnout. He highlighted that the race offered several distances, from a 21‑km half‑marathon to a 3‑km family run, and noted that about two‑thirds of the participants were civilians who came to show support for the Army.
General Dwivedi also said the run was held at around 21 locations across the country, drawing more than 35,000 runners nationwide. “The support from the people of India is truly encouraging,” he said, adding that he had to pause Army warriors’ participation because sign‑ups were “overflowing.”
Lt. Gen. J.K. Sharma, another senior officer, shared his experience. “Running Shauryaveer has always been a privilege and a great honour,” he said, adding thanks to the organisers.
Shaurya Diwas, observed on October 27 each year, commemorates the 1947 bravery that secured Jammu and Kashmir when Indian troops first landed in Srinagar. The event’s race categories catered to all ages and fitness levels—from the 21‑km timed race for adults to the 5‑km People’s Run and 3‑km family run for runners above ten.
The Army said this year’s success demonstrates the deep bond between the Armed Forces and civilians, showcasing unity, patriotism, and respect for those who defend the country.
