Imphal, Oct 10 – Manipur’s Women’s Commission said the state has become a source and transit point for human trafficking in recent years. The Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), working with the National Commission for Women, launched an awareness drive in Jiribam to fight this modern slavery.
The MSCW explained that human trafficking means recruiting, moving or keeping a person—often a girl or woman—through force, lies or exploitation. “Anyone can be caught in this, but the most at‑risk groups in Manipur are tribal girls and those with weak legal protection,” said Chairperson Tiningpham Monsang.
The Jiribam event included four speakers who covered the signs of trafficking and how communities can report suspicious activity. The program had more than 150 participants, ranging from local women and children to police, health workers, lawyers and NGO staff.
“We want Jiribam’s women and girls to know where to seek help and how to protect themselves,” Monsang said. “We are working with law‑enforcement agencies, NGOs and local leaders to stop trafficking before it starts.”
The MSCW also ran a one‑day training on the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act (2013) at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, again in partnership with the district administration. The session, led by Advocate Mordecai Kamei, urged employees and employers to create safe work environments and to understand the law’s protections.
By educating women, tribal communities and public officials, the MSCW hopes to break the cycle of trafficking and ensure that every Manipur resident can work and live without fear.
